Rowland USD Launches Powerful Partnership To Provide Families Technology and Training to Engage Learning
Family Learning Workshops Held Oct. 1 and 8
ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – SEPTEMBER 30, 2016 – To further expand technology access and engage family learning, the Rowland Unified School District is the first district in the San Gabriel Valley to partner with PowerMyLearning, a national non-profit which provides laptops and extensive hands-on trainings to families in underserved communities. Family Learning Workshops will be held on Saturday, October 1 and 8 for selected families at two Rowland Unified Schools: Giano Intermediate and Rowland Elementary. At the end of the trainings that assist parents with digital learning, PowerMyLearning will provide more than 300 families a laptop to take home that is theirs to keep.
“Rowland Unified is committed to providing innovative learning for all of our students. This partnership builds on the exciting technology initiatives already underway throughout our District and will help expand access to technology at home and help our families be comfortable with using the tools for learning,” said Rowland Unified Superintendent of Schools, Julie Mitchell.
This Saturday, October 1, Family Learning Workshops will be held at both schools with sessions in English and Spanish. Families explore how to access fun and engaging digital learning activities that will help their students excel academically. Giano Intermediate 7th grade families will have training all day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and again on October 8 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Rowland Elementary 4th grade families will participate from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. this Saturday.

The organization partners with schools, districts, and after-school hubs to provide teachers with coaching, and students and parents with devices and training. The organization has demonstrated impact on student achievement and love of learning; teacher instructional practices; and parental confidence. Since launching operations in Southern California in 2008, PowerMyLearning has served over 16,000 Los Angeles-area families in under-resourced communities with broadband-ready computers and training.
